Ten-year project to refurbish exterior wood trim on historic campus buildings.

Two years into a ten-year project, Painters USA is proud to be refurbishing the valuable wood trim across a number of century-old buildings at the University’s main campus in Dallas, founded in 1911.

Project Highlights

The scope of this project involves intense handwork and the constraints of the university’s academic calendar, requiring our ability to commit resources and prove our business sustainability for the project duration.

Century-old wood trim requires the removal of old caulk and paint followed by fresh caulking and painting, which must be done by hand, one-by-one, including access to buildings up to 60 feet high.

SMU did not want this project to disrupt the academic year and the daily lives of students, faculty, and staff. Our ability to meet their scheduling needs and have experienced, background-checked employee perform the work was key.

Scheduling flexibility and respect for deadlines, which meant working weekends and evenings in office buildings and accommodating shutdowns and operational constraints in production facilities.

Deploying large, well-trained and well-coordinated crews allows us to complete big projects, including one high-ceiling facility that required us to build custom scaffolding onsite for cleaning, surface prep, and repainting.

Painters USA has the experience and technical skills needed for cleaning, repair, and repainting of store exterior walls that include expanded polystyrene (EPS) substrates and concrete masonry (CMU) construction.

From the start, we knew that Walmart is in a league of its own. We prepare our crews with custom training and take stock of our learnings to develop and apply best practices to help the company tackle and prevent issues.

Working directly with headquarters and local store managers, Painters USA has worked on stores in 7 states since 2019, stretching from Arizona to Ohio, and completing several projects per season, no handholding required.

We sometimes work very early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize disruptions and safety risks, and we always meet our time frame and deadline commitments—communicating any deviations as soon as they’re identified.

Painting is disruptive, which is a problem at retail stores that are open nearly every day of the year. Painters USA works diligently to minimize our time on site and deliver results that hold up well and look good for more than a few years.

All the people we work with appreciate that Painters USA has its own quality assurance program, with daily checks, report cards, and other tools to make sure the local store manager and headquarters are satisfied.

Questions you should be asking

While each project and client will have unique needs, when you engage with a commercial painting contractor, the first step should be a visual assessment of the space and surfaces. Then once the contractor and coating products are selected and the project begins, the work space will be defined and adjacent areas protected. Then comes surface prep and paint application, followed by thorough clean-up. A walkthrough will be done to identify and punch list items.

The people we send to work at your site will be Painters USA employees who were background-checked prior to being hired and enter the appropriate level of our Apprenticeship Program based on NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) programs and guidelines. Additional training is provided to ensure they have the necessary safety and production skills to work on any commercial project. It’s just one more assurance of our experience, reliability, safe work practices, and quality outcomes.

Painters USA is a commercial painting contractor with a strong commitment to workplace and jobsite safety. We employ safety directors in both our Chicago and Dallas offices, conduct regular safety training classes on topics like fall prevention, lock-out / tag-out procedures and confined space requirements. Our team leaders address any potential safety hazards they encounter, and they are empowered to do what’s necessary to prevent and respond to any safety incident.

Along with confirming safety procedures, it’s a good idea to verify any commercial painting contractor’s safety track record through their EMR and TRIR ratings.

  • EMR (Experience Modifier Rate) is an insurance industry rating system to assess worker’s comp claim risks. Look for a rating of 1 or lower.
  • TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate) is a measure of safety performance based on OSHA recordable incidents, and again, the lower the better. Across construction-related trades, the average is about 3.1. Learn more about TRIR rating information at the Bureau of Labor Statistics website.

The number #1 thing is to select a painting contractor with relevant experience, a sound reputation, and any other credentials that matter to you, like supplier diversity. Making a decision based solely on price can end up costing more in the long run.

Once you choose the contractor, collaborate on all plans with all stakeholders and participants represented. Agree on advanced preparations such as clearing the project workspace of equipment and product. Finally, give all supervisors and employees who will be affected by the work a heads-up, so they will know what to do (and not do!) and what to expect in advance. Getting everyone’s buy-in and support and clear communications will help ensure a smooth project with no cost overruns, missed deadlines, or other issues.
